FAQ - Fall Graduates

When is the Fall commencement ceremony?
The Commencement Ceremony for December 2017 graduates is on Friday, December 15, 2017 at 6:00 p.m. in the Sturtz Theater.  A ceremony for May 2018 and Summer 2018 graduates will be held on May 18, 2018.

Do I need to pay for my cap and gown?
No, the cost was included in your student life fee. There is no charge at time of ordering.

Where and when do I get my cap and gown?
Caps, gowns and tassels will be available in the JCC Bookstore beginning Monday, November 27, 2017 through Friday, December 8, 2017.

Do I need to pre-order my cap and gown? What is included in my cap and gown order? You do not need to pre-order your cap and gown.Your order includes the cap, gown, hood, and tassel specific to your program of study. It will also include any special recognition you received from the college, such as Phi Theta Kappa and Honors Program stoles, as well as military cords.

What should I do if I missed the December 8 deadline to pick up my cap and gown? Contact the JCC Bookstore at 315-786-2260 for more information.

Do I need to return my cap and gown?
No, the cap and gown is yours to keep. Or, you may choose to recycle it after commencement.

Is there a Commencement rehearsal?
There will be a brief commencement rehearsal on December 15 at 11:15 a.m. just prior to Senior Send-Off (taking place in the McVean Gymnasium from 12:00 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.). Graduating students are asked to meet Faculty marshals in the McVean Gymnasium at 11:15 a.m.

Will there be any special events for graduating seniors?
Senior Send-off, a luncheon for graduates with music and prizes, will be held in the McVean Gymnasium from 12:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Friday, December 15.

There will also be a reception held in the Jules Center Commons for graduates and guests immediately following Commencement.

How many tickets do I receive for Commencement and when can I pick them up?
Each graduate can receive up to three (3) guest tickets when they pick up their cap and gown in the JCC Bookstore beginning Monday, November 27.

Can my guest attend Commencement if they do not have a ticket?
A ticket is required to enter the Commencement Ceremony in the Sturtz Theater, however, guests without a ticket are welcome to view the ceremony live via closed circuit telecast in the Jules Center Amphitheater (Room 6-002).

Do children need a ticket?
Yes. All children in attendance must have a ticket and be accompanied by an adult. Please be aware that strollers are not permitted in the Sturtz Theater.

Will childcare be provided? 
Jefferson Campus Care will provide free childcare during the Commencement Ceremony for children between 18 months and 12 years. Contact Jefferson Campus Care at 315-786-2357 by 12:00 p.m., December 13 to register. Walk-ins will not be permitted.

Can I reserve seating for my guests who need special accommodations (i.e. difficulty with stairs, use of wheelchair or walkers)? 
Yes, stop in the Bookstore to complete an accommodative needs seating request form.  It is important that you complete the form prior to December 8 so that the College may easily accommodate all requests.

Where do graduates need to meet on the day of Commencement?
All participants will line up by their academic division in the McVean Gymnasium by 5:30 p.m.  Marshals will be available to assist with proper line-up. Robing assistance will be available in the gymnasium and the locker rooms will be open.  You may not leave personal belongings in the rooms. Please be sure to allow extra time to do this, if needed, as the procession to the gymnasium begins at 5:55 p.m.  A representative from the Liberal Arts Division and the Math/Science, Technology, Health and Business Division will assist graduates in lining up for the march.  It is important that you arrive on time to ensure everyone receives clear instructions for the ceremony.

Where do I park?
There will be signs posted in the JCC parking lots directing guests and grads to available parking in Lot C.

Will there be professional photographs taken of the ceremony?
Yes, a professional photographer will be at Commencement to photograph all graduates as they receive their credentials. Proofs of the photos will be available online in a few days after the ceremony and mailed to you in the weeks following the ceremony. You may place an order at that time.

When do I get my diploma?
Diplomas are mailed in mid-January to the home address you indicated on your application for graduation.
