St. John Fisher College Becomes Jefferson Higher Education Center Partner ~ SJFC to offer Education Doctorate in Executive Leadership in Watertown ~

On Monday, February 27, representatives from Jefferson Community College and St. John Fisher College formally signed a memorandum of understanding making St. John Fisher College an official partner institution in Jefferson Community College’s Higher Education Center initiative. St. John Fisher College will offer an Education Doctorate (Ed.D.) in Executive Leadership on Jefferson’s campus in Watertown beginning in May.

The Higher Education Center initiative at Jefferson Community College provides increased access to bachelor’s, master’s, professional certification, and now doctoral programs, for residents in the North Country region. Jefferson Higher Education Center (JHEC) partners provide collaborative educational offerings that benefit the region’s workforce and economic development.

The partnership with St. John Fisher College will help meet the community’s needs by providing advanced educational opportunities for professionals holding or seeking executive leadership positions in P-12 education, higher education, healthcare, not-for-profit, business, military, or government agencies. The purpose of offering the Ed.D. Program in Executive Leadership at JCC is to provide an advanced program of study for executives and managers in these fields in the Jefferson/Lewis County region in New York State.

The Ed.D. in Executive Leadership is administered by the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. School of Education at St. John Fisher College. The doctoral program is based on a model designed around a rigorous multidisciplinary program of study in executive leadership that provides candidates with an opportunity to develop the critical leadership skills and knowledge required in today’s increasingly complex, diverse, and information-driven organizations. The accelerated, alternating weekend format is an attractive feature that allows working professionals to complete the program in approximately 28 months.

St. John Fisher College will begin offering the program in Watertown in May 2012. Applications will be accepted until the deadline of May 1, 2012. Priority consideration will be given to those individuals who apply by April 15, 2012.

Candidates for admission to the doctoral program are required to have a minimum of three years of successful management/administrative-level experiences, completed a master’s degree in a related field from a regionally accredited institution, and must have a proven record of excellence in mid-level leadership and management. An information session for candidates to learn more about the program will be held on Wednesday, March 14, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in Room E116 of the Extended Learning Center at Jefferson Community College.

“Establishing educational partnerships and extension sites is one of the ways we intend to achieve mission-consistent and fiscally responsible enrollment growth for the College,” said Dr. Donald Bain, president of St. John Fisher College. “By offering the Ed.D. in Executive Leadership at JCC, we are one step closer to that goal.”

“I’m excited for the educational opportunities that St. John Fisher College is bringing to our local community,” said Dr. Carole A. McCoy, president of Jefferson Community College. “I was a working adult when I decided to get a doctoral degree and I keenly remember trying to find a program that was flexible enough to meet my needs. The format of the St. John Fisher College program is perfect for people who are working full-time. I would have loved to have a high quality program like this that was accessible and close to where I lived and worked rather than having to travel.”

Jefferson currently has JHEC agreements with Keuka College, SUNY Upstate Medical University, SUNY Potsdam and SUNY Empire State College, along with numerous articulation agreements that facilitate seamless transfer from Jefferson to bachelor-level programs at colleges and universities across the country. Jefferson’s Higher Education Center initiative is currently located in the Extended Learning Center on campus, along with Jefferson’s Continuing Education Division and the NYS Small Business Development Center. Long-range strategic and facilities plans include the construction of a more comprehensive and community-oriented Higher Education Center on campus.
