Dalton Hall - Without the Man

Her husband died before her own mother,
But the dog looks a lot like him
With brown fur and large frame.
She is afraid to let him go, she
Doesn’t want Hospice around again,
She doesn’t want to lay awake at 2AM
When he stops breathing, doesn’t want
The pain of separation to leave her with
A century-old woman who is losing her
Memory; that dog is all she has in
Her house anymore, even if he walks
Up and down the road aimlessly searching
For lost friends he can never find
And she always welcomes him home
Because he is the beautiful likeness of
Her husband with those sunk in eyes
And loud clearing of the throat that
Eases the pain in her sleep without
The real man in her bed.
