Three Crows Watch

Rick M. Henry

Three crows watch the fence-work
Rising and landing, field to yard and back
One has a broken leg
They were here last summer
And the summer before

One hundred summers ago
They rose and landed
From tree to tree and back
Watched saw-teeth take their limbs

One hundred summers before
They watched Enos Jaffrey burn two acres
Plant wheat
Harvest twenty bushels
For the squirrels.
