Green

Valerie Huskey

Green
The color of a duffel bag
flung hard
over my shoulder
as I braced myself for what
lie ahead.

Crisp, cold wind
dissipated the tears
that fell
out of sight.

Children's faces
in mind's eye.
Their blue eyes shining,
sweet innocence,
lost through time.

Green,
Like the thundering
trucks
that rattled by.
Mindless and aloof,
cargo,
unknown.

Grenades split
the even silent air.

Green,
The rough color of a woolen blanket
pulled tight
against my skin.
The lights,
extinguished.
Alone in the void
of the night.

Green,>br> A sigh,
a kiss and a long
good-bye.
How I miss home, tonight.
