Mariana Sings to the Peaks

Carlton Fisher

When one finds
The bones of a whale
Upon a mountain top
There can only be two possible conclusions

That whales used to fly
Or that mountains used to swim

And if whales once wore wings
Then who came to clip them
And say,
“You,
You are not meant for the sky”?

And if mountains once swam
Then who came along
To pull them from the surf
And say,
“You,
You are in danger of drowning”?

And whose right was it
To clip wings or call home
The mighty who once
Were where they are not now?
