JCC Announces Keynote Speaker for Leadership Day

On October 28, 2015 Jefferson Community College (JCC) will hold its 8th Annual Leadership Day conference for high school and college students. The keynote speaker is 22-year old actor RJ Mitte from the AMC drama Breaking Bad.

Diagnosed with cerebral palsy at the age of 3, Mitte spent his toddler years wearing leg braces and working with speech therapists. Different than his peers, he was a victim of severe bullying to the extent of being physically injured. When he was 13 years old his family moved to Los Angeles. As a homeschooled student, there were few opportunities to meet new people which led Mitte to a local talent agent where he was welcomed to train with actors. His first gig came as a background character on the Disney show Hannah Montana and then the IMDb show Everyone Hates Chris. Mitte landed a steady role as the character Walt, Jr. on AMC’s Breaking Bad, and made appearances on the ABC Family show Switched at Birth and IMDb film Dixieland.

Despite a rough start in life, Mitte has made significant achievements and uses his success coupled with his condition to help advance opportunities for others with disabilities. He speaks to students at colleges and high schools across the country to inspire strength and kindness. He works to educate the public and advance opportunities for others with disabilities. An advocate for people with disabilities, Mitte is a representative for several organizations that raise awareness of equality and diversity including I Am PWD (Performers With Disabilities), the National Disability Institute’s Real Economic Impact Tour, United Cerebral Palsy and PACER’s National Center for Bullying Prevention.

In addition to a keynote address, JCC’s Leadership Day program features sessions on team building and goal setting. The program was launched in 2008 to enhance and develop leadership skills of high school and college students. In 2013, JCC’s Leadership Day Program received the Northeast Region Program of the Year designation by the Association for the Promotion of Campus Activities.
