Laverne Cox Presents “Ain’t I A Woman” at JCC May 7

Jefferson Community College (JCC) Campus Activities Board will host “Ain’t I A Woman” presented by Laverne Cox, a nationally recognized transgender advocate, will discuss her life’s journey. From growing up in a single parent Christian household to finally finding the courage to take her first steps into womanhood. Saturday, May 7, 2016 at 8:00 p.m. in the McVean Gymnasium.

Laverne Cox is best known for her role on the Netflix original series, Orange is The New Black, where she plays the role of Sophia Burset, a transgender woman and inmate at Litchfield Penitentiary.

As the first transgender woman of color to have a leading role in a mainstream scripted television show, Laverne’s accolades fall into a series of firsts. She became the first trans woman of color to produce and star in her own television show in VH1’s TRANSForm Me. Laverne is also the first trans woman of color to appear on an American reality television program, VH1’s I Wanna Work for Diddy.

Recently Laverne has made appearances on TV shows including Fox’s The Mindy Project, Bravo’s Girlfriend’s Guide to Divorce and MTV’s Faking It. Project Runway All Stars also features Ms. Cox as a guest judge and she served as one of the faces of Revlon’s #GoBold campaign, an empowering web series that celebrates bold, provocative women setting out to accomplish their goals. Her documentary Laverne Cox Presents: The T Word, of which she was both the host and executive director, aired on MTV & Logo to impressive ratings.

Outside of acting, Laverne Cox has become a renowned speaker and activist, spreading her message of “moving beyond gender expectations to live more authentically” all over the US. As a result of her empowering lectures and work as an advocate for so many different communities who have faced discrimination, she earned herself a coveted spot as one of Glamour magazine’s 2014 Women of the Year.

General admission is $10 for the public and JCC students get one ticket FREE. Tickets will go on sale in March. For more information call 315-786-2431.
