Jefferson Community College (JCC) is pleased to announce that Cailey M. Burrows, Watertown, and Michael E. Pitts, Theresa, have received the State University of New York (SUNY) 2016 Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence. This honor, established in 1997, is bestowed upon students who have best demonstrated and been recognized for the integration of academic excellence with accomplishments in the areas of leadership, athletics, community service, creative and performing arts or career achievement.  Both students will be recognized for their achievements at Jefferson’s Commencement Ceremony on May 20, 2016.

Cailey M. Burrows, of Watertown, NY, is a mathematics and science major. Cailey is a member of Phi Theta Kappa and the National Society of Leadership and Success. She is a certified nursing assistant and maintains a 3.8 GPA. Cailey has been very active on campus as the treasurer of Student Government, chair of Budget Finance Committee, board member of the Faculty Student Association, and student member of the Board of Trustees. After Jefferson, she will be pursuing her dream of being a physician’s assistant at D’Youville College.
Michael E. Pitts, of Theresa, NY, graduated from Jefferson in May 2015 with an associate of science (A.S.) in individual studies, and anticipates graduating in May with an A.S. in business administration. Outside of his outstanding academics (4.0 GPA), Michael has been involved in the veteran services education office as a veteran’s administration work-study for one year. He assists and advises hundreds of veterans and their family members in understanding and completing the required VA education paperwork. Mike has 21½ years active duty military service and has been deployed to Iraq, Afghanistan, and Haiti. He has received the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Meritorious Service Medal, and the Army Commendation Medal. Mike is a very strong academic student who applies his leadership skills and attention to detail to every facet of his life.

Ms. Burrows and Mr. Pitts were among 248 students from across all SUNY college campuses that were honored April 5, 2016 at the annual SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence Awards Ceremony held at the Empire State Plaza Convention Center in Albany.

“This award is our way of saying ‘thank you’ to stand-out SUNY students whose achievements reflect their own impressive hard work as well as the support of their families and friends, and SUNY’s world-class faculty and staff,” said Chancellor Zimpher. “The 248 students we honor with this year’s award have excelled academically, become role models on campus, and established themselves as leaders in the community. Congratulations to all of the students receiving the 2016 Chancellor’s Award for Excellence.”
