JCC Celebrates 30th Anniversary Serving Fort Drum Military

On November 17, 2016 Jefferson Community College (JCC) reached a significant milestone. Jefferson and Fort Drum officials celebrated three decades of working together to serve the educational needs of active duty military soldiers and their family members. A ceremony to commemorate the 30-year anniversary was held at The Commons on Fort Drum with speakers including Fort Drum Garrison Commander Colonel Bryan Laske, JCC President Dr. Carole McCoy, Fort Drum Education Services Officer Joseph Agresti and JCC alum, full-time faculty member and Fort Drum veteran, Edward Smalls. The ceremony was emceed by JCC Director of Military Programs Donald Johnson.

Jefferson awards the maximum American Council on Education recommended credits for formal military service schools and military occupational specialties and recognizes the American Council on Education credit recommendations for military credit inventory (hands-on military experience evaluated for college credit).

Jefferson is a member of the Servicemembers Opportunity Colleges and participates in the Army’s GoArmyEd portal system to soldiers, local and duty stations around the world, a variety of college courses and degree programs.  The College also participates in the Department of Defense My Career Advancement Account program that financially supports military spouses who pursue a degree or certificate in a portable career. Jefferson holds 8-week courses at Fort Drum in the McEwen Library Education Center and the DHR Education Annex Building. The College also offers special unit classes that can be held in the brigade, battalion and company classrooms arranged around the unit’s training schedule.        

The College received 2017 Military Friendly® School designation and Top Ten Military Friendly Award by Victory Media who surveyed thousands of institutions to capture the best practices in recruitment and retention of veterans and military service members and their families. Furthermore, Jefferson is acknowledged by Military Times in the Best for Vets Colleges 2017 rankings.

Nearly 40% of Jefferson’s enrollment is comprised of military or military related students.
