Jefferson Symposium for High School and College Students to be held on April 12

The Jefferson Community College (JCC) annual business conference, Jefferson Symposium, will be held on Wednesday, April 12, 2017 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in Sturtz Theater. Organized by the JCC business and hospitality/tourism club and overseen by the JCC business department, Jefferson Symposium is intended for area high school students and college students. There is no cost to attend.     

Jefferson Symposium, launched in 2016, replaced the College’s annual Entrepreneurship Day. The goal of Jefferson Symposium is to bring area students to campus for a shared learning and networking event focused on business affiliated topics. “Transitions” is the theme of this year’s conference. Emphasis is placed on high school students preparing to transition to college, college students preparing to transition to another institution, members of the military preparing to transition to college, and for anyone preparing to transition into the workforce. Jefferson Symposium will connect transitioning members of the community to helpful resources and better prepare them to embark on a new journey.

JCC Vice President for Academic Affairs Thomas Finch is the keynote speaker. Finch rose from an entry level position as an adjunct instructor to vice president over the course of thirty-six years. Perseverance, dedication, and motivation fueled him. Prior to employment in post-secondary education, Finch worked as a business consultant, accountant, and held numerous positions in the restaurant arena. He will share his personal experience with transition and managing change. Finch holds an associate’s degree from Cobleskill Agriculture and Technical College, and a bachelor’s and master’s degree from SUNY Albany.

Jefferson Symposium will also feature a panel of local employers who will share insight on their expectations of job candidates. Breakout sessions will include navigating the job search, career trends in the North Country, a day in the life of a college student, earning a bachelor’s degree, how to stay hired, and interviewing, social media for job seekers, and more. Furthermore, attendees will have the opportunity to tour campus including a model suite in East Hall, Jefferson’s on campus student housing facility.
