JCC to Hold 53rd Commencement on May 19, 2017

Jefferson Community College (JCC) will hold its 53rd annual spring commencement ceremony on Friday, May 19 at 7:00 p.m. in the McVean Student Center Gymnasium. The College is honored that Dr. Richard L. Halpin, Professor Emeritus and Founding Director of the Center for Community Studies at JCC, will deliver the keynote address. 

Approximately 413 students are candidates for May and August 2017 graduation with nearly 421 diplomas and certificates to be conferred. 

Tickets are required for admission to the gymnasium and each student who is participating in the ceremony has received up to four tickets for guest seating in the bleachers. Tickets are not required for entrance to the Sturtz Theater where the ceremony will be simulcast. In addition, the commencement exercises will be video-streamed through the College’s website beginning at 6:45 p.m.

Guest entrance doors, adjacent to Parking Lot D, will open at 6:30 p.m. and handicapped and special needs guests may disembark at this entrance. 

Commencement speaker Dr. Halpin holds a bachelor of arts degree in sociology, a master of science degree in counseling and personnel services and a Ph.D. in higher education administration, all from SUNY Albany. He joined Jefferson in 1973 as director of student activities and cultural affairs and later, joined the social sciences department faculty. He served as chair of the social sciences department and then chair of the Liberal Arts Division. Among his many achievements is the role he played in moving the Center for Community Studies from a “good idea” to the valuable resource it is today. He served as the Center’s founding director in 1999 up to his retirement in 2002. He received the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Professional Service in 1990. He served the College 29 years and was honored as Professor Emeritus in 2011. Since his retirement, he worked for Cornell Cooperative Extension as executive director and currently, as an independent consultant of various organizations for strategic planning, leadership and organizational development.
