The Jefferson Community College Board of Trustees and College President Carole A. McCoy have named the Northern New York Community Foundation as recipient of the 2017 Jefferson Citation.  Executive Director Rande S. Richardson accepted the award on behalf of the Northern New York Community Foundation at the College’s fifty-third spring commencement exercises on May 19, 2017.

The Jefferson Citation was established by the Jefferson Community College (JCC) Board of Trustees to “recognize an individual or organization whose leadership and actions have demonstrated outstanding commitment to education and the vision and mission of Jefferson Community College.”

The Northern New York Community Foundation (NNYCF) is an organization recognized throughout this community for its efforts to make achieving a college degree a reality for citizens throughout the North Country.  The Foundation raises, manages and administers an endowment and collection of funds for the benefit of the community through college scholarships and grants to non-profit organizations to improve our community’s quality of life. The Northern New York Community Foundation has provided ongoing support and encouragement to Jefferson Community College and the Jefferson Community College Foundation for capital and operating initiatives, and has been a strong supporter of the Center for Community Studies surveys across the tri-county area

Since 1980, the Northern New York Community Foundation has provided more than $14.5 million dollars in scholarships to students of Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties including numerous students coming to JCC. Part of these awards is the wonderful collaboration between the NNYCF, JCC Foundation and Stephen H. Can through the Jefferson Can Community Scholars program to provide first year tuition at no cost to students coming to Jefferson who are in the top 15% of their high school graduating class.  The Northern New York Community Foundation administers this special scholarship program.

“The Northern New York Community Foundation is a tremendous asset to the communities in Jefferson, Lewis and St. Lawrence counties,” said Terry N. Fralick, chair of the JCC Board of Trustees.  “Jefferson Community College, and more importantly our students, have benefitted tremendously from the Northern New York Community Foundation and we are happy to be a partner of the NYCCF for over 35 years. The JCC Board of Trustees are honored to recognize the NNYCF Board of Directors and the entire organization as they truly embody the spirit of the Jefferson Citation.”
