JCC to Screen Documentary 13th on September 20

In recognition of Constitution Day, Jefferson Community College (JCC) social science department will screen Oscar nominated documentary, 13th,on Wednesday, September 20 at 6:00 p.m. in Jules Center, Room 6-002. Discussion will be held afterwards. Admission is free and the public is welcome to attend.

Released in 2016, 13th draws a connection between the 13th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and today’s disproportionate incarceration of African American citizens. The 13th Amendment of the Constitution abolished slavery and states "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction." 13th was released October 2016 and runs 100 minutes. The producer of 13th is Ava DuVernay, most known for her role in the 2014 Martin Luther King Jr. drama, Selma.

Jefferson presents a variety of events and speakers to promote dialogue about inequity and diversity and other topics of interest to the public.
