This program is intended for students who want to prepare for an exciting, challenging and rewarding career in healthcare.  This program will train students to assist physicians by performing functions related to the clinical responsibilities of a medical office.  Instruction includes among other things preparing patients for examination and treatment, routine laboratory procedures, diagnostic testing, technical aspects of phlebotomy and the cardiac life cycle.  Students will review important topics including phlebotomy, pharmacology, the proper use and administration of medications, taking and documenting vital signs, cardiology including proper lead placements, a professional workplace behavior, ethics and the legal aspects of healthcare. This program includes 140 hours of classroom lecture and hands on labs and a clinical externship opportunity at a local healthcare provider.  

Funding Opportunities
MyCAA funding may apply for qualified individuals. Note this scholarship will NOT pay for the textbooks. Textbook expenses will be the financial responsibility of the student. For this course, textbook cost is $150. MyCAA Education and Training Plans (ETPs) must be submitted at least 4 weeks prior to the training start date to MyCAA for consideration for funding within the training program.

Traditional Army tuition assistance, GI Bill® funding and traditional college financial aid does not apply.

Program Objectives
After completing this program, learners will be able to:

• Explain the clinical medical assistant's role in patient-centered care within the medical facility
• Describe the specific personal characteristics, interpersonal communications, and professional skills required of the clinical medical assistant
• Demonstrate an understanding of medical facility safety practices, measures, plans, and standards
• Explain the steps in quality care throughout the patient encounter including preparation of the medical facility, completing required paperwork, taking vital signs, and completing the check-out tasks
• Explain the concepts related to medical asepsis and surgical asepsis in the healthcare environment
• Demonstrate knowledge and skills related to pharmacology and the administration of medications within the scope of the clinical medical assistant practice
• Explain the concepts related to medical asepsis and surgical asepsis in the healthcare environment
• Explain the medical assistant's role and tasks when helping with minor surgery and diagnostic testing procedures in the medical office, including laboratory procedures, specimen collection, microscopic assessment, and hematology procedures
• Demonstrate the ability to assist the physician as directed in various medical specialties of the medical office
• Explain considerations of healthcare for special populations including pediatrics and geriatrics
• Apply the basic electrophysiologic principles of cardiac conduction to the anatomy and physiology of the body
• Identify proper placement of leads to ensure an accurate and consistent EKG reading
• Evaluate various EKG rhythm strips following established normal criteria for each of the wave forms and intervals
• Analyze a variety of EKG rhythm strips, identifying rate, rhythm and intervals
• Analyze a variety of EKG rhythm strips for common dysrhythmias
• Apply an understanding of the technical aspects of the EKG machine to the correct use of the machine and interpretation of artifacts
• Describe the functions, associated terminology, types, and rhythm strips of pacemakers
• Describe diagnostic electrocardiography in terms of goals, types, procedures, indications, and contraindications
• Explain how to interpret a 12-lead EKG strip
• Explain myocardial infarction in terms of physiology, symptoms, and EKG interpretation
• Describe common cardiac medications
• Explain the steps in selected specimen collection procedures performed by the phlebotomy technician
• Explain the safety procedures in the healthcare setting and specifically in performing specimen collection procedures
• Identify specific supplies and equipment used in selected specimen collection procedures
• Explain precautions and guidelines when collecting specimens in special populations such as pediatrics and geriatrics
• Define quality of care and explain the impact on patient medical care when quality and safety are compromised in phlebotomy procedures
• Describe the anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, and medical terminology associated with phlebotomy
• Describe the requirements of the successful phlebotomy career including desired character traits, training and education, roles and responsibilities
• Explain how phlebotomists communicate with others in the healthcare setting verbally, nonverbally, within the health record, and using computer systems
• Identify common legal issues, ethical issues, and regulatory issues commonly impacting the phlebotomist

Optional Volunteer Externship Opportunity

Learners who complete this program are eligible to participate in an optional volunteer externship opportunity with a local company/agency/organization whose work aligns with this area of study in order to gain valuable hands-on experience.  As learners progress through their program, an Externship Coordinator will reach out to coordinate placement.

Note: Additional documentation including health records, immunizations, drug-screening, criminal background checks, etc. may be required by the externship facility. Any additional expenses incurred for the optional externship will be the financial responsibility of the student.

Program Description

The Clinical Medical Assisting online certification course from Jefferson Community College is designed to prepare students to function as professionals in multiple healthcare settings. Medical assistants with a clinical background perform various clinical tasks including assisting with the administration of medications and with minor procedures, performing an EKG electrocardiogram, obtaining laboratory specimens for testing, educating patients, and other related tasks. Job opportunities are prevalent with physician’s offices, clinics, chiropractor’s offices, hospitals and outpatient facilities.

Program Description

You will learn the professional traits and responsibilities to become a vital part of the healthcare team in a medical office, clinic, hospital, and other healthcare settings. You will also be prepared for the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) exam.

In this online medical assistant certification course, you will learn a broad range of skills that make medical assistants versatile and valuable, including medical terminology, medical law and ethics, HIPAA rules, scheduling systems, and the importance of certified clinical medical assistants as healthcare team members. You will also be prepared to perform duties from the front office to the back office. These duties include measuring vital signs, assisting with exams, performing laboratory testing, maintaining equipment and supplies, administering injections, obtaining blood specimens, scheduling appointments, registering patients, and answering and returning phone calls.

You will also learn medical terms and their application as part of your medical assistant training. You will start by learning the origins of medical words and how to recognize prefixes and suffixes used in medical terminology. Then you will learn about the body as a whole and how to differentiate cells, tissues, organs, systems, and cavities. Next, you will learn to define and describe the function of each system of the human body. This knowledge will help you take the next step in your medical career or education.

The online medical assistant certification course also includes the opportunity to become CPR certified and participate in an unpaid clinical experience. Because employers recognize that certified medical assistants deliver greater value, completing the course will help you to be well-prepared to find your place in this rewarding healthcare career. You will also be able to sit for the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) exam through the National Healthcareer Association (NHA).

This CCMA certification course includes a voucher covering the certification exam fee. However, please research your state's requirements by visiting your state's medical board site before enrolling to ensure this course is the right fit for you. Students intending to work in Washington state may be required to provide or request an official transcript from the school they are enrolled with to qualify for employment as a Medical Assistant – Certified.

National Healthcareer Association (NHA) Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA)

Certification Requirements

• In order to sit for the national certification exam, candidates must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
• While you'll learn everything you need to know to pass the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) national certification exam offered by National Healthcareer Association (NHA), you'll still need to ensure that the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant course will meet your state's requirements. Please visit your state's Medical Board site for more information. Students intending to work in Washington state may be required to provide or request an official transcript from the school they are enrolled with to qualify for employment as a Medical Assistant – Certified. Certification exams offered by NHA are only available online to candidates located in the US.
