Kady Hoistion, Director of Nursing, Selected for Inaugural SUNY Nursing Simulation Fellowship
Published: October 31, 2024
Kady L. Hoistion, Watertown, Director of Nursing at Jefferson Community College (JCC), has been selected for the inaugural State University of New York (SUNY) Nursing Simulation Fellowship. She is one of 11 Fellows in New York State, joining representatives from institutions including Binghamton University, Corning Community College, Stony Brook University, SUNY Broome, SUNY Farmingdale, SUNY Orange, SUNY Plattsburgh, SUNY Suffolk, SUNY Upstate, and University at Buffalo.
The SUNY Nursing Simulation Fellowship was developed based on recommendations from the SUNY Future of Healthcare Workforce Task Force, a group convened to guide SUNY in addressing the critical health care workforce shortage. Following the engagement with over 125 experts across SUNY institutions as well as the health care industry, the SUNY Future of Healthcare Workforce Task Force identified fully leveraging nursing simulation as one of four short-term action and investment priority areas.
Furthermore, the SUNY Nursing Simulation Fellowship aligns with Governor Kathy Hochul’s goal to increase New York State’s health care workforce by 20%. In 2023, Governor Hochul signed legislation enabling nursing students to complete one-third of their clinical training through high-quality simulation.
President Daniel J. Dupee, II, says, “We are incredibly proud of Kady Hoistion's selection as a Fellow in the SUNY Nursing Simulation Fellowship. This prestigious recognition reflects her dedication to advancing nursing education and enhancing the skills of future healthcare professionals. Kady's expertise and commitment to innovative, high-quality simulation-based learning will greatly benefit our students and contribute to strengthening the healthcare workforce across New York State."
Director of Nursing Kady L. Hoistion says, “I am truly honored to be selected for the SUNY Nursing Simulation Fellowship. This opportunity to collaborate on vital educational resources while supporting the development of New York State’s healthcare workforce is incredibly meaningful. I’m excited to contribute to a system wide library that nurse educators can access to enhance the integration of clinical simulation.”
Fellows will have the opportunity to advance their knowledge and skills in simulation education, and the unique opportunity to shape the future of simulation-based learning across the SUNY system. Through their expertise, they will contribute to the development of the SUNY Simulation Shared Resource Library, a central repository of nursing simulation resources that will benefit SUNY nursing programs system wide. The SUNY Simulation Shared Resource Library will include vetted simulation scenarios spanning various specialties, teaching strategies, simulation education best practices, and more. The library will enhance the quality and diversity of simulation experiences for nursing students while increasing faculty capacity to support simulation operations beyond scenario creation, such as simulation space management, technical operations, and running simulation labs with students.
Jefferson’s nursing program, ranked #2 Best Associate Degree in Nursing Programs in New York State by Nursing School Almanac, is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing. The college enrolls up to 64 new students in the program each fall. Students receive hands-on training in state-of-the-art nursing laboratories and have significant nursing simulation laboratory time, resulting in more practice hours producing optimum results. JCC’s nursing degree program can be completed in two years.
