Hazing Prevention and Awareness

At Jefferson Community College, we believe that involvement in Clubs and organizations, as well as athletics, is an essential part of the student experience, fostering leadership, teamwork, and personal growth. However, we have a zero-tolerance policy for hazing in any form. Hazing undermines our values of respect, inclusivity, and safety, and it is against the law. Any actions that threaten the well-being or dignity of our students will not be tolerated and will be met with strict disciplinary action. We are committed to maintaining a positive and supportive environment that enables all students to thrive.

Any act which endangers the mental or physical health or safety of a student, or which destroys or removes public or private property for the purpose of initiation, admission into, affiliation with, or as a condition for continued membership in a group or organization, regardless of the express or implied consent of the victim, to include, but not be -limited to any brutality of a physical nature, such as whipping, beating, branding, forced calisthenics, marching, and walking on line; wearing uniforms, chanting/greetings, forced servitude, or other forced activities such as public stunts or acts of buffoonery; exposure to the elements; forced consumption of any liquid, food, liquor, drug, or psychological abuse or humiliation, which adversely affect the mental health or dignity of the individual, the property of the individual or others, and/or demanding that the individual engage in conduct prohibited either by state law or the college’s rules and regulations.

If the incident is occurring at the present time, call 911 immediately.

There are two ways to report an incident of hazing:

  1. Contact Campus Safety & Security at the Deans Collaborative Learning Center, 15-140 or by telephone at 315-786-2222, or via email security@sunyjefferson.edu.
  2. Submit a Complaint Form

Once a hazing report is submitted, the Chief Judicial Officer (CJO) or their designee will investigate following the standard judicial procedures outlined in the Student Code of Conduct Policy.  Additionally, Campus Safety and Security may conduct an internal criminal investigation or collaborate with an off-campus agency as needed.

Student Code of Conduct – Specifically addresses hazing section 5.8, which prohibits any action threatening the mental, psychological, or physical health of another person, including those for initiation or affiliation with an organization.

Club & Organization Sign-Up Form – Includes a statement on hazing that students must acknowledge and links to this webpage with definitions

Athlete Code of Conduct – Requires athletes to initial a statement regarding hazing, referencing this webpage.

Spring 2025: There were no violations during this reporting period.
