The Jefferson Community College (JCC) Athletics program presented $4,000 to the American Cancer Society, with funds raised through its annual Coaches vs. Cancer Holiday Shootout held in December. The event brings together regional high school basketball teams, student-athletes, and the community to support cancer research, the Clinton Clark Memorial Scholarship through the Jefferson Foundation, and JCC basketball programs.
The 2025 Coaches vs. Cancer Holiday Shootout featured 28 high school basketball teams from the tri-county and Central New York region, competing in 40 games over six days. As the signature fundraising initiative for Jefferson Athletics, the shootout continues to grow each year, reflecting the program’s commitment to community engagement and philanthropy.
“This event reflects Jefferson’s ongoing commitment to making a positive impact beyond the classroom through meaningful community partnerships and sustained annual fundraising efforts that support athletics and student success initiatives,” said Daniel J. Dupee, II, President. “By bringing together athletics and community support, we are able to contribute to causes that make a lasting difference in the lives of others.”
“This event is about more than basketball,” said Jeff Wiley, Head Women’s Basketball Coach and Director of Athletics. “It’s about bringing people together to support a cause that touches so many lives, while also creating opportunities for our student-athletes to engage in meaningful community service.”
“We are grateful for Jefferson’s continued partnership and the support of the entire community,” said Tina Berkey, Event Tri-Leader, American Cancer Society. “Events like this help fund critical research, patient services, and education, bringing us closer to a future without cancer.”
“I’ve personally lost both a teacher and a coach to cancer, so this cause is especially meaningful to me,” said Brooke Wiley, member of the Jefferson women’s basketball team. “Being part of an event that raises awareness and supports cancer research, while also helping those affected, is something I’m proud to contribute to.”
The Coaches vs. Cancer Holiday Shootout continues to grow as a signature event for Jefferson Athletics. This year’s success highlights strong collaboration among local schools, families and supporters.
In addition to supporting the American Cancer Society, $1,500 of the proceeds went to the Jefferson Foundation to support the Clinton Clark Memorial Scholarship. Mr. Clark served as an assistant coach for the men’s and women’s basketball teams at Jefferson for three years prior to his passing. Brandon Dodge, recipient of the Clint Clark Memorial Scholarship and member of the Jefferson men’s basketball team, said, “I know it was Coach’s hopes and dreams to see me in Jefferson maroon and gold.”
Marissa Clark, Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach, said, “After losing my father, Coach Clint Clark, Coach Wiley & I decided to turn our annual Holiday Basketball Classic into something bigger than basketball. It gave us a deeper purpose—to make these two weeks truly impactful while helping others through their own battles. We’re incredibly grateful for the donations we were able to provide American Cancer Society and hope they help families like mine. It means so much to my family, and I’m grateful to be able to share this passion with my team while making a difference together.”
