CCS and SUNY Plattsburgh Release Findings of Five-County Women's Health Survey
Published: June 17, 2026
The Center for Community Studies at Jefferson Community College (JCC) completed a first-of-its-kind study on North Country residents' health and healthcare experiences, with special emphasis on women's health and the impacts of adverse childhood experiences. The Center partnered with faculty of Gender and Women's Studies at SUNY Plattsburgh, to design and complete the study of adults in Jefferson, St. Lawrence, Franklin, Essex, and Clinton counties. In the study, a total of 2,991 adult residents were surveyed from the five-county region between February 3-14, 2026.
The study includes, but is not limited to, questions pertaining to North Country residents’ overall health status including chronic health conditions and mental health, menstrual health concerns, experiences growing up in the North Country including experiences of nutritional insecurity, bullying, and parental neglect, challenges with access to and quality of available healthcare services, and general socio-demographic information. The result of this sampling of 2,991 North Country residents is an approximate margin of error of ±2.0% after weighting sample survey results toward North Country population characteristics.
A topline summary report of the study findings and the cross-tabulated results are available for free to the public on the college's website. North Country residents who wish to learn more about this study or further discuss the findings are encouraged to contact Dr. Akanksha Misra at amisr001@plattsburgh.edu.
This study was funded by the generous contributions of the Northern New York Community Foundation, Cloudsplitter Foundation, SUNY Research Foundation, the School of Arts and Sciences at SUNY Plattsburgh, the School of Education, Health, and Human Services at SUNY Plattsburgh, and Jefferson Community College.
