JCC Launches New Microcredential in Early Childhood Development
Published: October 14, 2024

Jefferson Community College (JCC) is proud to announce the launch of its new Early Childhood Development 1 microcredential, designed to equip individuals with essential skills and knowledge to jumpstart a career, or advance in their existing role, in childcare and related fields. The Early Childhood Development 1 microcredential program consists of three credit-bearing courses and offers a fast, flexible, and focused educational path enabling individuals to gain meaningful credentials without the longer commitment of a full Associate degree program.
“This microcredential offers practical, high-quality education that verifies and validates specific skill sets,” says Dr. Megan A. Stadler, Associate Vice President of Liberal Arts. “It’s a great way for students to demonstrate their competence in early childhood development and potentially increase their opportunities for advancement within the field.”
Students who complete the Early Childhood Development 1 microcredential will gain nine college credits while acquiring knowledge and skills in several important areas: understanding child development, ethics of early childhood care and education, the importance of diversity and inclusion, effective observation, assessment, classroom management strategies, and regulatory standards as defined by the New York State Office of Children and Family Services, as well as improved interpersonal and communication skills.
Upon completing the Early Childhood Development 1 microcredential, students will not only be better positioned for career entry and advancement but also have the option to transfer these nine credits toward one of JCC's certificate or degree programs, such as the Early Childhood A.A.S. or A.S. degrees.
“Completing this microcredential opens doors, whether students want to start working right away or continue their education to earn a full degree,” says Dr. Stadler. “We’re excited to offer this opportunity for fast, flexible learning that meets the needs of our community.”
