Pre-Apprenticeship Construction Training Open to Anyone

Published: April 18, 2023

Anyone interested in building a foundation for a career in construction is encouraged to apply for pre-apprenticeship construction training offered by Jefferson Community College (JCC). Thanks to a New York State Department of Labor (NYSDOL) grant, unemployed and underemployed workers who meet NYSDOL eligibility may have the opportunity to apply for free. The tuition for this program is $3,851. Many companies offer tuition benefits as part of their employee benefits package. Construction workers, new to the industry, are encouraged to check with their employer to see if this is a benefit they could take advantage of to further their skills in construction.

Pre-apprenticeship construction training, a 12-week program, will be held at the Lewis County JCC Education Center (LCEC) from  May 1, 2023 through July 26, 2023. Individuals with transportation hurdles will be happy to learn the LCEC is accessible by Lewis County Public Transportation.

Upon successful completion, participants will accrue 400 hours of classroom and hands-on training and two industry-recognized credentials, the OSHA 10 card for training on critical safety construction workplace topics and the National Center for Construction Education and Research certification in Level 1 Carpentry. In addition, successful candidates will have an opportunity to apply for a skilled trade apprenticeship at the conclusion of training and/or move directly into employment in the construction sector.

Megan A. Stadler, JCC Associate Vice President for Strategic Initiatives, says, “We are excited to address the workforce shortages in our region while giving individuals, especially those unemployed and underemployed, the opportunity to prepare themselves and build a strong foundation for a high demand job in the construction industry.”
