Veterans at Jefferson Gain More Financial Support Through NYS Program
Published: June 09, 2025
In a significant move to support veterans pursuing higher education, Governor Kathy Hochul announced the expansion of the Veterans Tuition Award (VTA), a program that covers up to the full cost of undergraduate tuition at approved SUNY institutions and vocational training programs including Jefferson Community College (JCC).
Effective July 1, 2025, the expanded VTA program will now accept applications year-round and extend eligibility to veterans who have completed at least four years of active-duty service, as well as those who served in Vietnam, the Persian Gulf, or Afghanistan and were honorably discharged.
“New York State is proud to expand access to the Veterans Tuition Award program, ensuring that those who served our country have the tools they need to succeed in building a brighter future for themselves and their families,” said Governor Hochul. “This initiative reflects our steadfast commitment to supporting veterans with opportunities for higher education and career success.”
Commissioner of the New York State Department of Veterans’ Services Viviana DeCohen echoed the Governor’s commitment. “Expanding access to education through the enhanced Veterans Tuition Award program is one important way we are helping those who served, build their futures,” she said.
President Daniel J. Dupee, II, says, “At Jefferson, we are deeply committed to supporting our veterans as they transition from service to success in higher education and beyond. The expansion of the Veterans Tuition Award is a vital step in removing financial barriers and opening doors for those who have sacrificed so much for our country. We are proud to provide a welcoming and supportive environment where veterans can thrive and achieve their academic and career goals.”
Paul Keller, Associate Vice President of Enrollment Services at JCC, adds, “At Jefferson, we are honored to serve those who have served our country. With this significant increase in funding, we’re excited to support even more veteran students as they pursue their educational goals. Our proximity to Fort Drum has fostered a deep, long-standing partnership, and we remain committed to meeting the unique needs of our military-affiliated students with pride and purpose.”
Designated a 2024 Best for Vets college by Military Times, Jefferson is ranked the number one community college in New York State offering both online and in-person programs tailored to those who served. The expanded VTA aligns with the College’s mission to provide accessible, affordable, and veteran-friendly pathways to academic and career success.
