The WorkPlace & Jefferson Community College Host Free Information Session to Highlight Career Opportunities in Civil Service
Published: October 04, 2024
Jefferson Community College (JCC) will partner with The WorkPlace and Jefferson County Department of Social Services to host a free information session to highlight career opportunities and the related academic degree programs. The event will take place in the Commons, Jules Center (Building 6), at Jefferson Community College at 5:30PM on Thursday, October 10, 2024. Dinner will be provided during the session.
Representatives from Jefferson County Department of Social Services will present information on their open positions for case workers and social welfare examiners along with the educational requirements needed to be eligible for hire. Jefferson County Department of Social Services Commissioner Karen Marcum states, “The mission of Jefferson County DSS is to empower individuals and families to be safe, healthy, and financially secure through compassionate, efficient delivery of services. If you are invested in our community and want to make a real difference in the lives of others, come and talk with us on October 10th!” The current wage for a social welfare examiner in Jefferson County is $21.42 per hour and a caseworker earns $28.97 per hour. A caseworker in Child Protective Services earns $30.23 per hour and all the positions include health and vacation benefits plus mileage reimbursement.
JCC has several programs which could prepare a student for a career in civil service, most notably the Addiction Studies, A.A.S and Human Services, A.S. degree programs. Faculty members and College officials will present information on these programs as well as internship opportunities that will prepare students for work in the field. College president, Dr. Daniel Dupee, II, states “The Addiction Studies, A.A.S. and Human Services, A.S. programs enable students to gain the skills needed to enter the workforce directly after completing their education. Students finishing coursework or obtaining a degree from Jefferson in these programs will directly impact the community as our graduates fill these civil service positions, bringing much needed human resources to the county.”
Cheryl Mayforth, director of The WorkPlace, will provide information to participants on possible funding opportunities through the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) to assist or cover tuition expenses for students, as well as information on the required civil service exam needed for these County positions. Mayforth states, “These are rewarding career opportunities with good pay, benefits, and retirement packages. We are looking forward to helping DSS fill the vacancies.”
Interested participants must RSVP by October 7, 2024, to agarno@jeffersoncountyny.gov. For more information on the event, contact Cheryl Mayforth at The WorkPlace, (315) 786-3651.
