JCC To Host Yamatai Japanese Drum Group on November 20, 2025
Published: November 11, 2025
Jefferson Community College (JCC) will present Yamatai, a dynamic Japanese drumming ensemble from Cornell University, on Thursday, November 20, 2025, at 6:30 p.m. in Sturtz Theater. Admission is free and the public is welcome. The JCC food closet welcomes donations of non-perishable food and hygiene items.
Founded in 2006 by Cornell University students under the guidance of Masataka Kobayashi-sensei of Bonten, a professional taiko ensemble from Japan, Yamatai celebrates the power and artistry of taiko—Japan’s iconic, large-scale drums known for their deep, thunderous sound. The name Yamatai symbolizes pure, primal human energy, echoing an ancient world where music, dance, and drumming were acts of magic that inspired warriors and blessed harvests. Through its performances, Yamatai strives to awaken that same spirit in modern audiences, leaving them energized by the rhythm and vitality of Japanese culture.
