Expanded Jefferson County Public Transit Opens More Pathways to Jefferson

Published: July 27, 2026

Getting to college from rural areas in Jefferson County just became easier and affordable. With the launch of Jefferson County Public Transit's new rural bus service, residents from Carthage and Alexandria Bay to Cape Vincent and Sandy Creek, and communities in between, now have an affordable transportation option to reach Jefferson Community College (JCC). For less than the cost of a gallon of gas, just $2 each way, prospective students can overcome transportation barriers, build in-demand skills, earn a college degree, and prepare for greater earning potential.

"Transportation has long been a challenge for some students pursuing higher education," said Paul D. Keller, Associate Vice President of Enrollment Services at Jefferson. "With this affordable public transit option, one more barrier to earning a college degree is being removed helping individuals gain the skills needed for a better-paying career. If you've been thinking about college, now is a good time."

Registration is underway for the Fall 2026 semester, with classes beginning August 24, 2026. Prospective students can choose from more than 50 degree, certificate, and microcredential programs designed to prepare graduates for today's workforce and/or transfer.
