MSAC Basketball Awards | JCC to Host NJCAA Region III Championship Mar. 1-3, 2024

Jefferson to host the NJCAA Region III Women's Basketball Tournament on March 1-3, 2024

Jefferson Community College (JCC) proudly announces the remarkable accomplishments of its athletes during the 2023-2024 Mid-State Athletic Conference (MSAC) basketball season. As the governing body overseeing Jefferson’s athletics program, MSAC orchestrates the Conference Championships and recognizes outstanding performances through All-Conference Teams and Player of the Year awards.

In this year's accolades, Jefferson athletes shone brightly, showcasing their dedication and talent on the court. Alongside these remarkable achievements, the College is thrilled to announce that the prestigious 2023-2024 MSAC Coach of the Year award has been bestowed upon Jefferson's women’s basketball coach.

Honorees of the 2023-2024 MSAC Basketball Awards are: 

Women’s Basketball 

LaKaiya B. Butcher, Fredericksburg, Virginia, was named 2023-2024 MSAC Player of the Year and named to the MSAC 1st Team. Butcher averaged an impressive 17.8 points per game, 10.4 rebounds per game, 4.2 assists per game, and 2.4 steals per game demonstrating unparalleled versatility on the court.

Kori M. Nichols, Brownville, was named to the 2023-2024 MSAC 1st Team. Nichols averaged a remarkable 18.7 points per game, 6.4 rebounds per game and 2.6 steals per game.  

Delaney A. Wiley, Cape Vincent, earned a spot on the 2023-2024 MSAC 1st Team, boasting an average of 10.2 points per game and 2.0 steals per game. Notably, Delaney consistently defended against the opposing team’s best player each game.    

Abigail E. Raven, Ogdensburg, was named to the 2023-2024 MSAC 2nd team with outstanding stats, averaging 10.2 points per game and 8.1 rebounds per game. 

DaeLynn B. Alcock, Evans Mills, was named to the 2023-2024 MSAC 3rd team with stellar performance each game averaging 7.9 points and 7.4 rebounds.  

Men’s Basketball

Shamell K. Ponds, Brooklyn, was named to the 2023-2024 MSAC 1st team with impressive stats, averaging 17.2 points, 3.8 assists, and 3.3 steals, each game. 

Kristan M. Lewis, New Rochelle, was named to the 2023-2024 MSAC 2nd team. Lewis averaged an outstanding 9.2 points per game and 7.2 rebounds per game.   

Receiving 2023-2024 MSAC Honorable Mention was Machi R. Plummer, Bronx. Plummer averaged an excellent 10.4 points and 9.4 rebounds each game. 

Additionally, Jeffrey L. Wiley, Coach of the Jefferson women’s basketball team and Director of Athletics, clinched the title of 2023-2024 MSAC Coach of the Year in his comeback season since taking a hiatus in 2005. He previously was named Coach of the Year in 1996, 1998, 2001, and 2005.

Jefferson along with MSAC members SUNY Broome, Cayuga Community College, Corning Community College, Finger Lakes Community College, Genesee Community College, Onondaga Community College, and Tompkins Cortland Community College are part of Region III  of the National Junior Athletic Association (NJCAA). Both the men’s and women’s basketball teams from Jefferson are competing in the NJCAA Championship. 

Furthermore, Jefferson Community College is the proud host of this year’s NJCAA Region III women’s basketball tournament to be held on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, March 1-3, 2024, in the McVean Center Gymnasium.

The Jefferson Cannoneers will compete against SUNY Cayuga Community College in the NJCAA Region III tournament on Friday, March 1, 2024 starting at 6:00 p.m.
