Workforce Development Offers Quality Programs to Serve the Needs of Employers and Employees

Jefferson Community College (JCC) Workforce Development offers education and training to meet specific business needs, and offers industry-specific training to help individuals launch a career or build skills and confidence to excel in their existing career. Many of JCC’s Workforce Development workshops prepare students for nationally recognized credentials such as certifications and licenses. Classes meet on JCC’s campus in Watertown, at the Lewis County JCC Education Center and online. The College also works with area employers and development organizations to build customized training opportunities for workforce initiatives.
Military spouses may use MyCAA (Military Spouse Career Advancement Account) funding to register for a workshop. Traditional Army tuition assistance, GI Bill® funding and traditional college financial aid does not apply. Additional funding is available for certain workshops and is noted below.
Registration is required a minimum of five (5) business days prior to the start of the workshop.

HVAC Technician
The HVAC Level 1 program is designed to introduce students to the HVAC (heating and
air-conditioning systems) technology. HVAC technicians install, maintain and repair
many different types of HVAC systems. This course is designed to prepare students
to pursue the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) 608 Core and 608 Small Appliances
(Type 1) Certification. Students are eligible for an optional externship with a local
employer after successful course completion. Funding is available through The WorkPlace

Home Food Processing Business Workshop
Learn about the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets Home Processing
Exemption, which allows individuals to build a business to make foods such as certain
baked goods, jellies, or snack mixes.

Clinical Medical Assistant
This program will train students to assist physicians by performing functions related
to the clinical responsibilities of a medical office. Instruction includes among other
things preparing patients for examination and treatment, routine laboratory procedures,
diagnostic testing, technical aspects of phlebotomy and the cardiac life cycle. Students
will review important topics including phlebotomy, pharmacology, the proper use and
administration of medications, taking and documenting vital signs, cardiology including
proper lead placements, a professional workplace behavior, ethics and the legal aspects
of healthcare.

Medical Billing and Coding
This course offers the skills needed to solve insurance billing problems, how to manually
file claims (using the CPT and ICD-10 manual), complete common insurance forms, trace
delinquent claims, appeal denied claims and use generic forms to streamline billing
procedures. CPT (Introduction, Guidelines, Evaluation and Management), specialty fields
(such as surgery, radiology and laboratory), ICD-10 (Introduction and Guidelines)
and basic claims processes for medical insurance and third party reimbursements will
be covered. This program meets the necessary requirements to take the National Workforce
Career Association (NWCA) Medical Billing & Coding Specialist (MBCS) Exam.

Computer Technician (CompTIA A+)
This program will build upon students’ existing user-level knowledge and experience
with personal computer software and hardware in order to present fundamental concepts
and techniques that technicians use every day on the job. Upon completing this course,
students will gain the essential skills and technical expertise necessary to install,
upgrade, configure, troubleshoot, optimize, repair and perform preventative maintenance
on basic personal computer hardware and operating systems. This course is designed
to fully prepare students to sit for the CompTIA A+ (Core 1 and Core 2) certification
exams. Students are eligible for an optional externship with a local employer after

This program prepares professionals to collect blood specimens from clients for the
purpose of laboratory analysis. Students will become familiar with all aspects related
to blood collection and develop comprehensive skills to perform venipunctures completely
and safely. Classroom and lab work includes terminology, anatomy and physiology; blood
collection procedures; specimen hands-on practice; and training in skills and techniques
to perform puncture methods. Students who complete this program will have the opportunity
to pursue the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) Phlebotomy Technician (CPT)
Exam.

CDL Class A Accelerated Training Program
This program will prepare you for an exciting, challenging and rewarding career in
transportation and logistics. The classroom and lab phase consists of CDL A permit
preparation, DOT safety/rules/regulations, and logbook training. 225 hours training
with 118 hours in the classroom and 107 hours of behind-the-wheel training. The behind-the-wheel
phase consists of all required backing maneuvers and road rides throughout the Watertown,
NY area on a 10- speed manual transmission, which allows students to be qualified
to drive an automatic or manual tractor-trailer without any restrictions. Upon successful
completion of this program, you will be eligible to take the CDL A license exam. CDL
A licensed drivers are qualified to drive a tractor-trailer, dump truck, straight
truck, snowplow, and more. Program graduates are qualified for job placement in the
North Country.

SHRM-CP/SHRM-SCP Certification Preparation Course
This SHRM-CP/SRHM-SCP Certification Preparation Course uses the SHRM Learning System,
the preferred study resource, to help you learn and apply HR knowledge and competencies
to real-life situations, and prepare for SHRM certification. This noncredit precertification
preparation course does not guarantee success on the exam but it does reflect the
general body of knowledge that is tested. It is also appropriate for any individual
interested in HR advancement or a professional new to HR with limited experience or
formal education in the field. 2022 SHRM Learning System will prepare you to sit for
the exam during the December 1, 2022 – February 15, 2023 testing window. There will
be no class on November 24, 2022.

Pharmacy Technician
This comprehensive 50 hour program will prepare students to work as a pharmacy technician
in a retail or other pharmacy setting and to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification
Board’s PTCB exam. Course content includes: pharmacy medical terminology, the history
of pharmacy, the pharmacy practice in multiple environments, pharmacy calculations
and measurements, reading and interpreting prescriptions and defining drugs by generic
and brand names. This program meets the necessary requirements to take the National
Workforce Career Association (NWCA) Pharmacy Technician (PTAC) Exam.

Dental Assistant
The program prepares learners for entry-level positions as a chair-side dental assistant
and familiarizes learners with all areas of administrative and clinical dental assisting
focusing on the responsibilities required to function as an assistant in a dental
practice. This course prepares learners to sit for the Dental Assisting National Board
(DANB) Radiation Health and Safety (RHS) exam. Funding is available through The Workplace

ServSafe
The ServSafe Certification is ideal for individuals who wish to prepare to take the
ServSafe Food Protection Manager Certification Exam. This one day 8-hour course will
prepare your restaurant operation to meet state managed training requirements for
foodservice personnel. Funding is available through The WorkPlace for qualified individuals.

Notary Public Prep Course
This seminar will prepare individuals for the NY State notary public exam. A notary
is an official witness of signing important documents and other oaths.

Full Stack Web Development Boot Camp
There is a high demand for individuals with programming and web designing skillsets,
with the estimated U.S. market size for this industry being $40.8 billion. In the
U.S., salary can range from $50,000-$145,000, depending upon experience, with the
average salary being $106,000. The Full Stack Web Development Boot Camp will help
learners acquire the skills and knowledge required to start handling web development
projects. Throughout the comprehensive six-month course, students are expected to
spend 15-25 hours a week to master the material covering databases for web applications
and several front-end to back-end programming/scripting languages such as Python,
JavaScript, HTML, React, etc.

Cybersecurity Boot Camp
The Cybersecurity Boot Camp will help students earn the skills and credentials required
to enter the cybersecurity workforce. Throughout the comprehensive six-month course,
students will be asked to spend 15-25 hours a week to master the material, including
basics from computer hardware and networking, network security, offensive, defensive
security, and ethical hacking. CompTIA A+, Network+, Security+, CySA+, Ethical Hacking,
and Pentest+ certifications will also be covered. Salary for cybersecurity professionals
range anywhere from $70,000 - $160,000, depending upon experience, with the median
average salary being $103,000. To meet this increased demand, the industry needs more
qualified cybersecurity professionals that are trained and certified.

Dialysis Technician
As kidney failure continues to be a growing national health problem, kidney disease
is driving the growing demand for well-trained dialysis technicians. Dialysis technicians
are employed in hospitals, outpatient clinics, and other medical facilities. While
most technician training has historically been done “on-the-job,” today’s healthcare
employers are seeking well-trained technicians who possess the necessary knowledge
and skills to fill this growing number of positions. This program provides learners
the knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties required of dialysis technicians.

Medical Administrative Assistant
Medical administrative assistants primarily work in doctor’s offices, clinics, outpatient
settings, hospitals, and other healthcare settings. Employment of a medical assistant
is expected to grow an impressive 34% by 2024. This program covers information on
the medical assisting profession, interpersonal skills, medical ethics and law, medical
terminology, basics of insurance billing and coding, telephone techniques, scheduling
appointments, medical records management and management of practice finances. This
program prepares learners to function effectively in many of the administrative and
clerical positions in the healthcare industry.

Home Health Aide
Home Health Aides provide assistance to elderly, disabled, ill, and mentally disabled
persons who live in their own homes or in a residential care facility. Some Home Health
Aides work with families in which a parent is incapacitated and small children need
care. Others help discharged hospital patients who have relatively short-term needs.
This comprehensive program prepares students for a position as a Home Health Aide.
Emphasis is on giving personal care in a client's home, communications, working with
ill persons, basic human needs, eldercare, nutrition, special diets, and home management.

Electronic Health Records Management
With the nation’s healthcare system moving to the electronic medical record, numerous
employment opportunities exist for medical assistants, health information systems
staff, patient registration professionals and other related positions. Healthcare
professionals with the ability to understand, update and maintain the electronic health
record are in great demand. This program prepares learners to understand and use electronic
records in a medical practice. Learners will review the implementation and management
of electronic health information using common electronic data interchange systems
and maintaining the medical, legal, accreditation and regulatory requirements of the
electronic health record.
