Exam Proctoring Guidelines and Procedures

For JCC Students (On-Campus Courses Only)

The JCC Testing Center provides make-up exam proctoring for students enrolled in courses that are physically taught and attended on campus. Due to facility and staffing limitations, this service is not available for online students or for proctoring entire class sections.

Note: If you are enrolled in a JCC online course, please refer to your course materials or contact your instructor for proctored exam information.

Proctoring Guidelines for JCC Students:

  • Proctoring is offered only when the Testing Center is open and available on an as-needed basis.
  • All proctoring is conducted by Testing Center staff only.
  • Students requiring accommodations must use Accommodative Services, located on the second floor of the Collaborative Learning Center (CLC).
  • Students must schedule their proctoring appointment at least 24 hours in advance.
  • Faculty members will refer students to the Testing Center and are responsible for delivering the exam to the Testing Center.
  • Faculty must provide clear instructions, including:
  • Whether the test is open book
  • Use of calculators or other aids
  • Permission for breaks (bathroom or otherwise)
  • Total time allowed for the exam
  • The deadline by which the test must be completed
  • Once an appointment is made, the Testing Center will confirm details with the faculty member.
  • A designated area is available for students to store personal items such as backpacks, purses, cell phones, and smartwatches.
  • The Testing Center is under video surveillance; all sessions are recorded.
  • The faculty member will be notified once the student completes the exam and must pick up the completed exam from the Testing Center.

For Non-JCC Students (Students from Other Institutions)

The JCC Testing Center offers free exam proctoring as a courtesy for students from other colleges or universities who are enrolled in online or distance education courses. This service is available by appointment only and during regular Testing Center business hours.

Note: Proctoring is only provided by approved Testing Center staff members. Contact details for approved proctors are listed at the end of this document.

Proctoring Guidelines for Non-JCC Students:

  • Authorization from the student’s school or instructor (via email, mail, or phone) is required before any exam can be administered.
  • The Testing Center is under continuous video surveillance during all testing sessions.
  • JCC does not charge any fees for proctoring. If fees are required by the student’s school, they must be handled directly between the student and their school. Testing Center staff cannot accept or process any payments.
  • No gifts or donations may be accepted by Testing Center staff from students or institutions.
  • Last-minute exam requests cannot be accommodated. Appointments must be made in advance to ensure availability of space and receipt of exam materials.
  • JCC computers cannot support special exam software (e.g., Respondus LockDown Browser). We can only support:
  • Paper/pencil exams
  • Web-based exams through platforms such as Blackboard, Brightspace, or Canvas
  • Students cannot use their own devices for exams and will not be granted network access.
  • A valid photo ID (government- or school-issued) is required to take an exam. No exam will be administered without acceptable ID.
  • Students should arrive approximately 5 minutes early for ID verification and system login.
  • Personal items (e.g., backpacks, books, phones) must be stored in a designated area unless explicitly permitted by the student’s school.
  • Any behavior deemed suspicious or consistent with cheating will be reported immediately to the student’s institution. This includes:
  • Use of unauthorized devices or materials
  • Writing on hands, arms, or clothing
  • Visiting unauthorized websites
  • Scratch paper will be provided as needed and must be returned at the end of the exam. Students may not take any notes or scratch paper out of the exam room.
  • Students must notify the proctor if they will be late to their scheduled appointment.
  • Students arriving late may not receive their full allotted exam time. For example, a student arriving 2 hours late for a 3-hour exam will only have 1 hour remaining.
  • For paper exams that must be mailed:
  • The student must provide postage and a mailing envelope at the time of the exam.
  • JCC will not provide postage or envelopes and will not mail exams without them.
  • Paper exams will be mailed the next business day.
  • The Testing Center is not liable for technical issues during web-based exams (e.g., connectivity problems, power outages, fire drills). In such cases, the proctor will notify the student's school as soon as possible.
